Job Description

Support the US Army’s Humanitarian Demining Research and Development Program at Ft. Belvoir as a Mechanical Technician.  Support the design, construction, systems integration, test, and international deployment of mechanical landmine clearance systems. Have experience with running, repairing, and maintaining heavy construction and agricultural equipment.  Provide diagnoses of failures on complex mobile systems such as diesel engines, hydraulics, and electrical systems. Make necessary repairs and modifications of these systems in shop and field environments.  Train global partner operators on the systems. Support test activities at field test sites both domestic and overseas.  Record and analyze test and operations data to produce technical reports of the demining systems. Travel worldwide in support these demining systems both for repair and training.  Likely travel each year is a minimum of three to four international trips of 2-3 weeks each.  Applicant must have or be able to obtain a Secret clearance. 

Essential job duties:

  • Assisting mechanical engineers with designs, and creating, testing, and manufacturing equipment to support humanitarian demining operations.
  • Preparing layouts and drawings of the assembly process and of parts to be manufactured.
  • Reviewing project instructions and engineering drawings to ascertain test specifications, procedures, objectives, test equipment, nature of technical problem, and possible solutions, such as part redesign, substitution of material or parts, or rearrangement of parts or subassemblies.
  • Devising, fabricating, assembling, and welding new or modified mechanical components or assemblies for technologies.
  • Planning, carrying out and reporting on technology field tests and evaluations; analyzing test results; modifying or adjusting equipment to meet specifications.
  • Operating heavy equipment, diagnosing mechanical faults, and performing routine system maintenance, general wiring and repair.
  • Conducting and documenting inventories of equipment, spare parts, and shipments.
  • Loading, securing and transporting equipment and Government property as required within Fort Belvoir, to/from Fort A.P. Hill, Quantico Marine Corps Base and other locations.
  • Loading and securing equipment for local and international shipments.
  • Traveling to train equipment operations and maintenance teams (often through a translator) where equipment is deployed overseas.  Diagnose and repair hydraulic, diesel and mechanical equipment overseas.  
  • Following occupational safety, security, and environmental regulations in regard to transportation, shipping, testing, and equipment operation.  Completing trainings and maintaining operator licenses as needed.  Safeguarding personnel and Government property, materials, supplies, and equipment.
Job Requirements

Experience and expertise required:

  • Ability to operate and repair diesel engines, hydraulics, and electrical systems.
  • Problem solving
  • Able to work with a diverse team of fellow technicians, engineers, project managers, test personnel, novice operators.
  • Ability to learn and adopt new skills.
  • Ability to multi-task and set priorities.
  • High school diploma, technical certifications
  • 5+ years' experience as a mechanic or technician operating, testing, maintaining, repairing, and/or modifying equipment
  • US citizenship is required
